What is your favorite memory from the fellowship?

Karen and I co-taught a workshop at a residential school with teens in the foster care system. The students were so much fun and were really bold and creative during all the creative movement and discussion. Afterward, the staff told us how exciting it had been for them to see some of the students open up in ways they hadn’t before. It was a reminder to me of how art can sometimes help us find our voices, or be more open to being brave and vulnerable.

What was your favorite part about living in St. Louis?

I love St. Louis! I love Tower Grove Park and the St. Louis Blues and the hole-in-the-wall bars and coffee shops in each unique neighborhood. I love the local improv community. Plus, many of the museums and cultural institutions are free! I also love how many people in St. Louis are trying to figure out how to have hard conversations and make our community inclusive for everyone.

Why should someone apply for the fellowship?

If you’re looking to grow as a teaching artist (and as a person), you need to apply for the fellowship. Karen and Gen are incredible teaching artists and two of the most compassionate people you will ever meet. They will help you grow and find success in and out of the classroom. The fellowship isn’t a cookie cutter experience – you’ll have the opportunity to shape your learning and focus in on specific areas of interest.

What makes Metro Theater Company special to you?

Metro Theater Company is special to me because they live out their mission in everything they do. When they say: “inspired by the intelligence and emotional wisdom of young people, we create professional theater, foster inclusive community, and nurture meaningful learning through the arts,” they mean it!

What is something you learned during the fellowship that shaped you as an arts educator?

That I am not the smartest in the room, and that often times you learn more from the students than they learn from you.

Why should someone apply for the fellowship?

If you want to stretch yourself as a teaching artist, but also learn in a nurturing environment that also pushes you to be the best version of yourself - you should jump on this train. If you want to know your potential or just tap further into what you can offer, you should apply for this fellowship.

What is your favorite toy in the education office?

The tall stuffed penguin is my best friend!!!! He’s a perfect hug buddy.

What is something you learned during the fellowship that shaped you as an arts educator?

Before the fellowship, I had done a lot of teaching alone, and struggled to share the space. Karen and Gen were excellent co-teachers who also taught me the fundamentals of co-teaching and reflection after our classes. I continue to implement what I learned from them into my current co-teaching work!
