Art Apart, Together

From the arts education movement, Off the Page: “We are theater makers! We are artists! We are teachers! We work with artists, actors, and students to create new works. And we do that in community with one another. Which usually means we do it together in the same physical space. But, in these uncharted, separated times, we can’t. But-we are theater makers! We are artists! We are teachers! So, we throw ideas up in the air, we flow with change, we bend in the wind and we KEEP MAKING ART.”

Metro Theater Company, The Alliance Theatre, and Cry Havoc Theater Company are partnering with Off The Page’s project, Art Apart, Together. Participation is open to all!

  • Off The Page will share a prompt to get your creative juices flowing

  • They will give you guidance on different ways to respond artistically

  • You respond to the prompt and send it to Off The Page

  • Off The Page’s team of collaborators will figure out how to weave all of the different responses together and create a script

  • Artists from across the country (and maybe the world) will take that script and bring it to life.

  • Off The Page will create a video: making new work, together

Response to the first prompt

Instructions from
Off the Page Education

Read or listen to the prompt and then set a 10 minute timer. You can write, draw, sketch, paint, make music or choreograph – anything and everything that pops into your head from the prompt for those ten minutes. When the timer goes off, do NOT edit whatever you created, just send it to Off the Page Education right away. You can write your response directly in the response box on the Off the Page website OR take a picture, video, or recording of your piece and attach it as a file.

Look out for the next prompt in the series. We will take your responses and work with artists to create a whole new piece. Look out for a video of it when it’s ready. And please share ART APART, TOGETHER with your friends, family, and other artists–everyone is encouraged to participate. We might be apart, but we can still make art together.

Actor Keith Randolph Smith reads Brigid Lowry's poem, In the World

In The World
By Brigid Lowry

in the strange early morning half light we sit
in the cloudiness of our questioning we sit
in our madness and our clarity we sit
in the midst of too much to do we sit
in the warm arms of our shared sorrow we sit
in community and in loneliness we sit
in sweet exhaustion we sit
in the blazing energy of being alive we sit

here with the singing crickets
here with each electric birdsong
here with the rippling of breezes and the dry grasses
here with the cobwebs and the clouds
and the dusty road upon us

us in the sound and the sound in us

us in the world and the world in us
